Hundreds of books are written on how to overcome shyness and gain confidence, but there are a few techniques anyone can try. Here are 6 suggestions:

1. Every morning, as soon as you get up, get in front of a mirror and say out loud “I feel terrific! I feel terrific! I feel terrific!” Repeat this affirmation ten times a day until it’s ingrained into your subconscious mind. When you’re feeling self-conscious, lock yourself in the bathroom. The results will blow your mind.

2. Feel good about yourself. Look your best. Dress up more often. You’ll feel more confident and have self-esteem this way. Seeing that you look good will boost your confidence and give others the impression that they should get to know you better.

3. Take a risk at least once a day. It’s very invigorating and conquering fears helps you grow in confidence and self-esteem. Start with small risks and fears, then move up to bigger things. You can do anything. Be confident in knowing that change will boost your self confidence and help you grow.

4. Tell them that you’re shy when you’re talking to them one-on-one, or with a group. Rather than leaving you just listening and wishing you could contribute, they’ll invite you into the conversation this way and they won’t miss you.

If you’re having trouble following a conversation in a noisy room, say so and move so you can hear. People respect honesty, and you’ll attract more honest people into your life.

5. Rejection is a thing everyone experiences. You don’t get rejected very often. If you get rejected like if you ask someone for a date, remember that everyone likes and dislikes things differently. There are times when you’re attracted to one type of person and not others. That’s okay with you because you’re probably just not their type. Accept that and know you’ll get over it. Keep in mind that people reject you because of their own likes and dislikes, not because of who you are. You are equally entitled to reject others because of your likes and dislikes.

6. You can start a hobby that makes you feel good about yourself or that makes you feel excited. It could be anything from gardening to Tai Chi to Karate. Take a lesson, learn an instrument, or sing. Do something that makes you excited and take a risk. Exploring things that make you feel excited is a great antidote to shyness.

It is common for people to experience shyness and a lack of confidence. Most of these problems may be easily overcome with a little help.
